does this look like a Toadstool shedding ?

I have had a leather Toadstool coral for about 2 months and it has been doing great. Yesterday, I noticed this slime/film hanging off of it. I have done some research and it may be that it is shedding but I would like to know for sure. Could someone take a look at the attached picture and tell me if it is shedding?

Why do they shed? Is there some type of chemical warfare going on between the corals?

It's just a normal part of their growth. They shed off algae and other things that start to grow on them, and get bigger and nicer every time they do it.
