or didn't we have someone in the club that was in the wood business?
I've got a thread on using treated lumber over in the diy forum and am wondering now about the chemicals in it being indoors.
Any help?

I would bet your house has treated lumber as the plates for all of your outer walls in your house. For sure in the basement and I would hope in the 1st floor.

As far as treated would being safe inside your home, are your licking the wood daily? I would think it would be safe otherwise. Untreated wood is much cheaper and many a stand are made from it.

The chemicals aren't the problem - it's the moisture content of the wood. Unless you can get some kiln dried treated wood, don't even bother with it. It will twist, warp and otherwise mold itself into something that will pull the stand out of level.

And, unless you have a constant drip on the stand for months on end, it won't be a problem. You could put some spar varnish on the untreated wood if you wanted to, but I wouldn't even worry about it.

Not licking it any more, but that was how i kept it from warping and level the last 2yrs

What Mayoboy says! Use regular plain ol' wood, not treated, and you'll be fine. Every peice of treated I have ever used, for anything, twist and warps like heck. Also, I notice it seems to split open a lot after a few years of drying too.

It's not a question of using it. I already have. The stand has been built since late June early July 06. it has been darn near level with the empty tank sitting on it since July. Stayed level with fw test for 2 days- I know nothing compared to weight of sw and rock.
Just wondering if I should go with it or tear down and rebuild using regular 2x4

Well if it is that old and still ok, I'd say go ahead and use it I guess. It would have to be dry by now.

If it's been up that long, it should be stabilized and good to go. Consider yourself lucky if it stayed straight and level. I have a post on my deck that looks like you could string it and shoot an arrow at the house...

Just to be on the safe side, you might want to throw a few coats of poly/shellac/varnish on it. The main preservative is usually some sort of copper so you'll want to encapsulate it to keep any causual physical contact from contaminating your tank.
