dosing mag?

i switched to brs dry cal and alk. lfs store recommended the two mag additives also. i have been using just reef code a and b. tank and corals look and grow good. so my question is, is it generally required to dose mag? i dont have a test kit for it so i didnt want to buy it yet and add it in my tank without testing.
