Dosing

This past weekend I bought some monti and I was told that I should dose my tank a little. I don't know the first thing about dosing and can't remember for the life of me what I was told by the guy I bought the monti from this weekend. I have quite a bit of SPS, some LPS and some zoas. If anyone could give me a 101 on dosing that would be great cause I am lost. It was recommended by a Lfs I get Fuel to dose but I just don't understand how it all works. I am thinking too hard and confusing myself. If anyone could help that would be great. All I have bee doing up until now is water changes to supplement. Thanks for the help!

Dosing could mean many things, whether it be dosing trace elements, amino acids, feeding, etc.

The main thing dosing means is your levels of calcium and alkalinity. I suggest you purchase a decent brand of ca and alk test kits like Salifert. See where your levels are. Look up online or speak with someone at Memfish to see where your levels should be for what your livestock is and what your needs are. Typically, you can test your ca and alk, then test it again a couple days later, and see what the change is. This will tell you what your tank is using. Then you can dose ca and alk supplements to keep parameters stable.

As far as dosing Fuel or other supplements for coral additives, that also depends on how much coral you have, lighting (higher lighting requires more food to process the light efficiently), etc. I would also speak with someone at Memfish about this, because you can add too much and junk up your water. Or you can post all you tanks inhabitants and your tanks equipment and all, and people on here can make suggestions.

Be real careful and do a lot of research before you start dosing anything!!!

By your join date and amount of post on the board i wouldnt recommend dosing anything until you know exactly what you are doing!!! Many experienced reefers have roasted their tanks dosing.

Bbarton908 with your tank and the small amount of sps/lps you have in there you dont need to dose. routine waterchanges is all you need to do to keep you levels in check and everything happy. you may have miss understood what i was saying. dosing is only needed when your corals and other inverts are exhausting the calcium , alk faster than you do water changes. just keep up with a waterchange on a weekly or bi weekly basis and you will be good. if you have any questions just give me a call ill be glad to help you .

Thanks man. I misunderstood what you said. You think the 5 gallons weekly will work?

My tank params were great for 6 months now I'm loaded with sps LPS and I have to dose cal and alk every other day alternating between the two one rule of thumb never dose anything chemical wise you can't test for aminos and the like are a good idea too or a good phytoplankton blend or filter feeder spot feed us good for sps too e.g. Coral frenzy oyster delight etc.. Happy reefing

5 gallons a week will do just fine . like i said until you are cranned full of sps and lps corals , there is no need to dose

I'd really planned on dosing but haven't be I don't have the proper tests yet.....this makes me think it may be wasted effort and money. Need to test! Running Red Sea coral pro salt. Mixes up quick and seems great so far.
