drain noise

are standpipes with the hole in the bottom of the tank quieter than an overflow bulkhead with the hole in the upper side of the tank?

i think the standpipe would have less air in the pipe, is that better?

My experience with noise is hit and miss. I like things really quiet so it took me about three weeks to get a quiet drain. I started with a weir (Marc's design) with a durso drain. I could not get it quiet. Finally I used an old hang on the back (HOB) filter and turned it into an oversize overflow. It works great and gives me some additional filtering. I went through a lot of pvc pipe and fittings to get my tank quite. You will learn somethings as you go.

The overflow with the weir was unbearable. The overflow with the HOB is not noticable. The only sound I can hear now is the pumps. I have low flow coming back from the sump into the tank.
