Has anyone drilled a 20g tank for a overflow? I would like to do this but I am scared that it is going to brake when I fill it. any info or link would help. Thanks:confused:

i have, two infact...how many holes are you going to drill? is the glass tempered? if it is then forget about it it WILL crack...if its only going to be two holes in the back you'll have no problem.

maybe just one, 1" hole in the back for the overflow. where would be a safe place to put it. I have read that it should be 1" away from the edge or more. It is a 20g tall and I would like to put the hole in the middle, by the bottom or near the top. I am still undecided. thanks for any info.

i did mine two inches from the top and yeah i too would go for the middle if its only going to be one. what size? is there going to be an overflow box ? i wouldnt drill it lower you dont want the tank to drain in case of a power outage(unless you are going to have an overflow box w/a durso standpipe) you'd get more hits posting this in the DIY forum.

Yes there is going to be a overflow box, the box will go from the top of the tank to the bottom. with a standpipe. It is going to be a 1" to 1-1/2" hole, If I put it about 3" from the bottom in the middle of the tank on the back would that be ok? I just don't want this thing to brake, it's not that I care about the tank but I don't want 20 gallons of water on my floor.

i honestly dont know. i do know that if that hole is drilled in the bottom pane of glass it WILL break. i tried it on two tanks and both times it broke. GL with what ever you do to it and let me know how it turns out.

Brainiac- your 20's bottom was probably tempered

Harold- I think youd be best having hole drilled about 2" from the tanks rim and putting in a durso syle standpipe to get rid of the whirlpool effec at the top of the tank.

what is a durso syle standpipe, is that just a pipe comming out of the back of the near the top of the tank with some type of screen on it to keep out the large stuff?

its a pipe that has a u fitting at the top and a hole in the other end

search it on google and go to his website.
