Thanks for the info. Do you think it would be ok to skip the eggcrate part?

I was thinking putting the piping down with holes and then then screen on top. Then placing the #2 aragonite gravel so the water could flow better at that level. Then topping it off with a few inches of fine.

My concern is that some fish might burrow down and expose the eggcrate and then there would be little to keep the fluids dissapating back into the display from the lower portion. I was thinking with this method, whatever gets dug out, the fine sand would backfill the hole.

You will need the egg crate to raise the sand bed off the bottom, creating the Plenum space, & also support the weight of the sand bed.

I thought of using a landscaper's cloth over the screen also in the above pic, but removed it & just went with the screen.
The unit is constructed in 2 pieces to fit in the display, because of the Euro brace on top ( acrylic display )

There was no need to glue the 2 together, the pieces were a tight fit, I did glue the rest of it however.

I would suggest that you make it 1" smaller all around, this way you can fill the space with the gravel, & not see the plenum

recently took apart my tank, cleaned off all my, cleaned my sandbed and did 60% water change. (hair algae was out of control). while I had my tank empty I added a drain to my plenum. Will see how it goes. to early to tell.
