DSLR long exposure

What is the maximum length of time for most DSLR exposures?


I believe the Canon Rebel XTi is 16 seconds, can this be increased in anyway?

30 seconds is the longest timed exposure. You can also select "bulb" which keeps the lens open as long as the shutter is depressed.

To save your fingers from arthritis, get a cable release which can lock to keep the shutter open in the "B" mode.

There are Chinese clones of the shutter releases on Ebay for a fraction of the genuine ones. I would get those.

instead of the cable release, on the nikon DSLR's you can get a wireless remote that works GREAT! Not sure if Canon has that ability or not.

I went with a wired remote so I didn't have to be infront of the camera as needed with the wireless ones.

Actually for my wireless one (nikon) you actually want to be behind the camera...

can you use the remote with the bulb exposure? Also D70 and D70s (don't know if true for other nikon and non nikon cameras) suffer from a diod being clsoe to the sensore which causes some red color cast to appear if exposure is more than a few seconds.

The typical way around that is to take a black frame shot at the same settings. The D70 and up even have an automatic mode to do that and subtract out the "hot" pixels on the fly. However it takes twice as long- Say one 30s exposure for the picture, then another 30s one to get the data to subtract from the first one. Every time.

So I do the dark frame subtraction by hand from a single dark frame exposure that I take at the end of my shooting.

And the IR remote is a pain for fish use- you do have to be on top or in front of the camera to get it to reliably trip. Not conducive to sitting across the room and tripping the shutter whenever the fish sticks it's head out the hole.

That is fixed on the D80 and up- it has a real port for a manual release.
