Duncan v. Dendro

Dendrophyllia is a non-photosynthetic coral; lighting conditions are pretty much irrelavent. It looks and acts very much like Tubastrea (in fact, its very difficult to tell most Dendro. species apart from Tubastrea).

Duncanopsammia, on the other hand, is photosynthetic, though it often does best under lower light conditions (meaning, dont put it 6" from a metal halide). It tends to have fairly large polyps, with a limited range of colors (whereas Dendro can have a number of color variations/combinations).

Both corals will feed Very heavily given the chance, the difference being that Dendro must be fed while Duncan doesnt have to have extra food, but will stay much healthier, with a much higher growth rate, if it is fed regularly. As far as telling Duncan/Tubastrea and Dendro apart, its pretty easy once you see them side by side honestly. Its kind of like telling Frogspawn apart from Hammer- to someone who isnt really familiar with them it might be tough to tell at a glance, but if you look at it for a few minutes its easy to make the distinction- clearly related, but different.
