Dwarf Puffers

I know that there are smaller puffer that can be kept in 30 gallon aquariums. Are there any puffers that stay small enough to allow me to keep a puffer and a few shrimp/snails/crabs in a smaller tank (the puffer being to small to eat these prey items)?

Only really tiny puffers are the pea puffers and they're a freshwater puffer. You may try Toby puffers if you want a small puffer that is marine. They will eat shrimp, crabs, and corals though despite their diminutive size.

I spoke to Kevin Kohen about this recently. He has a similar species to this one in his reef and it doesn't bother corals. Unfortunately I think it would still pester snails and crabs though... but maybe not. They really are small!

Unfortunately, even the small guys will eat snails and probably shrimp. I don't have a leopard, but my c. solandri (aka blue spotted toby) cleaned out all the snails and ate a peppermint shrimp when it was an inch long.

Depends on the dimensions a bit, i would be happy with a small Toby in say a 20 long.

I kept a bluespot Toby canthigaster solandri in a reef for ages. Didn't touch corals or shrimp, but ate all my little snails, or at least restricted them to NIF ta only. Fun fish tho
