Eel Care

I asked this in detail under advanced, but no one's come forward and this forum seems to get the most activity.

Has anyone ever had an eel lose the back inch of the tail? By my best estimate only an inch came off exposing the tip of the spine. I'm not sure if he's doomed or if I should be adding something to help him heal.

This is strange coincidence.... I've not had it happen to me but someone was telling me this week how they had an eel lose a large chunk of tail. It would struggle to get anchored but then they bought another one to pair with it and the new addition would 'sit' on the half-eel to help it stay in place.

First time I'd even heard of eels losing chunks! But it doesn't sound like your eel will be doomed by it if it can survive the initial infection

What was the cause? That's odd if not caused by another tankmate

Wet Web Media stated it may have been due to bacterial infection but I could also be to blame. We thought it was dead (slight ammonia spike, missing for a week, had only started eating after a month and sparingly at best). I lured his buddy out of the eel tubes below the sand and used a siphon large enough for him to comfortably fit in case he was alive. So maybe the force of the siphon resulted in the tip of his tail tearing free... However, even though I'm willing to take responsibility I can't believe the siphon would have had enough force to tear skin and meat off of the spine...

Either way, hes alone and in a pvc tube. I'm gonna attempt to get him eating better now that I can specifically target him and him alone. Any advice for products to use that could help healing would be appreciated.
