Electric Bills rising

As heat swelters more this yr, electric bills will rise. Im in the process of purchasing a nice big home, but with that in mind, the bigger the house, the more power it needs to cool off. Having a Large Reef Tank will also set the bill surging. How much are you paying for your nice big tank in utilitlity bills? If you can, state the size of your tank as well. Is it safe to say that $500 is average?

thor are you running high powered lighting on those setups? I am just wondering this same question also. So i am glad someone asked it.

It really depends where you live also. Electricity varies by as much as 40% dpending on part of the country. Mine with a 135 (MH)a 92 (VHO) and a 20G (VHO) was about $200 average total (not just tank incremental) in an all electric house.

Thats true and I also forgot about how the house is built to preserve energy.

Our bill last month was $330, and my tank isn't even running yet!!! ONly thing we have that uses electric power is the central AC......

156g reef tank

3-250wtt MH
4-56wtt t5's
blueline hd40 return
sequence dart close loop
mag5 CA reactor

bill is $375-425/mth

i have a suggestion for this thread, why not post your avg cost per kwh along with your monthly bill so we can get a better idea of how to estimate

Hey Edward - good to see you back!

It can really vary as mentioned, not just by location but by quality construction. My home is quite large, and my electricity bill is just about the same as a friend of mine who's home is almost 1,000SF smaller than mine - and he has no tank. My home is also custom built with all hand selected materials and his is a track house. A very nice track house, one of the best builders in Phoenix. There are so many other factors, we have multiple AC units, we're on the plan where electricity is MUCH more between 8-5, etc. But my home electricity bill, even when I had the 350G was $350 max, and that was in the dead of 115 degree summer. For six months out of the year its barely over $100.

I live in Utah. I have a 600 gallon system with 4-400 watt MH, 2-150 watt MH and 3 VHO. It costs me about $150 per month to run my tank alone. My total electric bill is about $250 - $300 per month. We pay about $.115 to $.12 per KWH

I pay close to 500 a month but thats 180g,90g,44g,40g,25g and 15 gallon. 2 chillers ,10 halides 4 skimmers ect you get the pic.

180g, Three 250W MH, Four 160W VHO's, 2 Barracudas. Electric bill has been averaging about $170 with AC on in a 3500sq ft house. .059 kwh.

I'm in Texas where we've experienced numerous, almost record-breaking days that exceed 100 degrees.

I have a 215g and my last bill was only around $350. I'm only running one 250w halide and 320w of actinics at night (to combat the scorching daytime heat) because I've got all my frags on one rock structure (my setup is fairly new so I don't have frags on any other parts of the tank).

my last bill was for $714 ending 14 july. and i don't have an active tank at the current time. i'm seriously looking into solar.

I had to laugh when I saw some of the replies here. Last year I thought I was going to die when we got our mid summer electric bills in the mid $600. Last month it hit $850!! I run MH for 6 hr only, my system is 1000g, and my AC runs at 78f at home. My buddy about an hour from me has a house only 20% bigger than me under AC with no tank and his bill last month was $1500!. He made me feel so good it is unreal!!!!!!
