most people i talk to say that theirs never lasted and i was always told that mine would do the same. but i have had good luck with mine so far. i have read that they like to be near the bottom of the tank with mild water flow and they are often found in dirty environments. as far as light i guess it doesnt need much with being at the bottom of a tank. i dont think they like water that is too clean. i stopped doing water changes every week and started doing it every other week and i feed my corals like once or twice a week and the fish every other day and my tank has never been better. i got a new 120 gal project in the works
my current tank is a 55 gal aga with 440 watt VHO's,euro reef skimmer,HOB cpr refugium, phosban reactor,2 koralia 1's,oceanic sump, currently using reef crystals but switching over to tropic marin pro reef in new tank.temp ranges from 79 to 80 and i keep the lights on a 8 hr cycle
i only have 4 fish and 2 snails
3 clowns and a mandarin im not really a fish person i had 1 clown and a 6 line wrasse but the wrasse dissapeared and i bought a mandarin to keep the little critters from over taking my tank and my sister put her 2 clowns in when i was away with the military. the fish are only there for biological purposes if it wasnt for that i wouldnt have any.
