I attached a picture of a trap I have used to catch crabs.
The 'T' on the bottom is open in one end. The extension on the other end of 'T' has a cap with holes drilled in it. The long upper pipe is a handle that sticks out the top of aquarium.
I drop sinking pellets in the capped tube and place the assembly where the current will go through the drilled tube. I train the crab by "feeding" it a couple days so he is not scared to sit in the short extension tube.
If you don't train them to be comfortable, they will just fly out of the tube when you pick it up.
I have caught lots of crabs with this method. All the live rock I buy is of the type that has lots of hitchhikers.
