Emergency - anyone have salt?

the tank was a little low last night, so I turned on my filtered water line - and forgot to turn it off :eek1:

the SG of the tank this morning is 1.005 - not good, fish still alive (somehow) but all corals look not so good

I'm removing everything I can to a rubbermaid that has 1.025 sg water until I can get the tank back up - but that won't be until at least Newark tropicals opens up in a few hours...


I could really use some salt - I only have enough to make another 5-gallons of water (I was planning on getting more soon - guess I should have thought of that sooner...)

Well - did a 20-gallon waterchange - lost my pygmy angel and all 3 of my cleaner shrimp.

I think that my two finger leathers are dead - both totally black - I think I'm to take them out of the tank before they can release any toxins into the water (siponing on them made them secrete some reddish-black stuff) - everything else - well, I guess I'll wait and see how it recovers - I got a 50-gallon bag of salt and used all of it to bring my salinity back to 1.020 - not perfect, but I figured it would help not to shock things any more than they have been already

Well, you have to take the good with the bad - hopefully most things will pull through this

Damn Nick, I'm sorry to hear that man! You should have come over, you know I sleep until noon but I would have heard you. I'm sure everything else will pull through. Don't worry about the pygmy, I'll ship you one after you get settled in. I'll have one when my buddy breaks down his tank.

No worries, my new place is about 1/2 hour from the best place in Wisconsin for Fish and Corals - just dissappointing as I held it in my hand in my only bucket of replacement water I had laying around trying to get it back to health - apparently that didn't help - Violet pulled through just fine though - although I wouldn't be surprised if she gets a bit of ich after being stressed out - that's a textbook reaction for tangs

I lost a chomis too - add that to the list

I should know in the next day or two what has made it, and what has not - some corals seem to look OK, but then melt away in front of your eyes. I'll have to get a bucket of salt when I get home and make up more water for another water change - just to dilute all the die-off that has occured.

nanoreef16g - we'll see how these corals look in a few days, as I wouldn't want to sell you something that isn't totally healthy -

Ouch, sorry to hear about that Nick. Hopefully, even though there was a 'shock' factor, most of what's left will come back fine.

Any losses are depressing .

Good move on the dilution of the die-off.

Well - here's the update

I did another 30-gallon waterchange tonight in hopes of keeping the ammonia level down and the fish healthy - pretty much all corals have died - the ones left I don't have much hope for. I thought my clam was doing OK, but I have my doubts now as it's starting to retract it's mantle near it's inlet - 3 out of the 4 chomis made it, the purple tang, the midas blenny, and at least one of the engineer gobies (havent' seen both at the same time yet)

The anemones (one green BTA, one Red BTA) are still there, but both expelled a large amount of xooanthae- and are not expanding, so I dont' hold much hope for them either.

my closed brain and open brain I'm pretty sure are dead, but I'm holding a small amount of hope - I'm sure by tomorrow morning that I'll be able to tell if they have a chance or not. if not< i'll try to pull them before they pollute the tank any further.

The only things that seem to have made it are some zooanthids.

In any case it is quite depressing - the only silver lining - is that I did recently make a bunch of frags of my stuff for a local guy - so the corals still have the chance of propigating further

I appreciate everyone's offers - and the kind words - in the end I guess I won't be moving as much, so that will definately make things easier on me - although I would much rather have it differently.

Hey Nick, sorry to hear about your losses. Don't call it quits for those anemones just yet though. They are pretty hardy, as long as the salinity is fixed for them and you are trying to fix the water like you said, they should pull through. If not, when and if my rose splits, your welcome to first dibbs, ((might be months mind you still a bit small)) that is if you dont find any in wisconsin((and even if you do you'd still be welcome to have one of the clones if I cana coax it to split))

As far as livestock - I do have some family in Northern Wisconsin (about a 6-8 hour drive depending on where you go), so if/when I go up there, there is Dr.'s Foster and Smith (Live Aquaria) and I'm willing to bet they have some pretty good stuff.

Right now I'm just contemplating whether or not I should still get an ac/dc converter for my car - I'm pretty sure I can keep the fish I'm taking in a cooler that I already have, and control the temperature in my car to keep the temp in the cooler pretty constant - and then just use my battery-operated air-pump to keep things healthy....

We'll see.

And I agree with you mbbuna - I don't know what to say either.

Every time I have something big and bad happens to my tank I do question whether or not this hobby is to me. By far, this was my most successful effort in keeping a reef tank - I felt very confident in all of my systems, but then I, personally, sabotaged myself - which is enough to make someone sick.

Every mistake does make you learn a little bit more about the hobby - and in this case, I will have a fail-safe system designed to make sure I do not do this again with my next system.


FWIW - I talked to one of the guys responsible for starting up the DRC today and he mentioned that I probably wiped-out all the parasites in my tank with such a long and intense full-system fresh-water dip :lol: - that's a nice way to think about it I guess

thats real disapointing nick. you had a nice collection going there and sounded all set up to take them on the road trip. moving always upsets your routines and stuff happens. oh well, the next one will be better.

no worries mate - here's what I posted in another thread (I'm such a hijacker :lol: ):

I haven't seen a stomatella, mini starfish, spaghetti worm, bristle worm, copepod, amphipod, mysis shrimp (all of which used to be covering my live rock/sand in epic proportions) since the whole-tank "fresh-water-dip"

The only thing I see moving in the tank is the fish - somehow my clam seems to be recuperating, and my green BTA is starting to come back (I think) - my red BTA still hasn't inflated at all .... anywho

- I'll be breaking the tank down soon (this weekend) anyway as the movers will be here on Thursday to pick everything up, and I need time to drain it and clean it before they get here.

Well, both anemones are showing signs of recuperation - both have started to "bubble" their tenticles again

and - somehow my Dendro has survived - I had my doubts - but today it is inflated again - at just a few good signs, but I'm really happy at least a few of the things I was really pulling for made it through :thumbsup:
