Equipment Question for keeping SPS?

Right now I have 3 maxijet 1200's on a reef fanatic wakermaker, and two Mag 7s running my return from the sump. I have the wavemaker set to alternate the pump every 30 seconds.

I am debating on buying mod kits for the maxijets OR adding an additional Tunze 6060 to the mix with the other three. Since, I can't hook the Tunze 6060 to the wavemaker, I will have to hook it to the main pump outlet which means it will only be shut off when I feed.

Will running the 6060 at all times have any ill effects on the health of the corals?

I am trying to gear my tank up to be full of SPS and I know flow is one of the 1st things that needs addressed.

I would love to have the tunze that are controlled but they are out of my price range for now, any suggestions or opinions would be greatly appreciated.

tunzes ROCK. i only have the controllable ones. it is easier to adjust corals to the flwo that way. i wouldn't spend the $$ on a non controllable on IMO. they aren't that much different in price are they...haven't looked in a while

my vote..get a controllable Tunze!

Is it in your 120 gal? If so, a single 6060 is going to do good things for the water flow, regardless of the corals. You could double it and still find lower flow areas in the tank easily.

Agreed. I've got a 6060 in my 58, and while it was tricky to arrange - I also have a number of lower-flow loving stonies [frogspawn, bubble] that fully exand [not too much flow where they're at].

Having said that, a controllable Stream is really the way to go, IMO.

One 6060 with the 3 maxijets on a wavemaker should give me enough flow in a 120 considering the tunze will be the time, I would think?

If I were to get a 6080 or 6100 do they have to be run on tunze wavemakers only?

Yes, as their wavemakers work differently than others.
Most wm's turn pumps on/off in sequence - the tunze allow for from 30% to 100% variance on a timed period - where the power for both settings + speed of switching is controllable [more options with multicontroller].

But unlike the on/off of the maxijet wavemakers, the 6000/6100/etc line is always running - but with variable flow.

I've read over this one...sounds like it would be pretty cheap. I was going to do this...then I decided being lazy like I am...it was prolly worth just spending the doe and getting a real Tunze...this is what I'm going to buy...

I just got a maxi mod prototype from the guys at premium aquatics, I glued the suction bracket to it and mounted it. I had a 6060 a long time ago and this thing is every bit as good as it. So much, so that I ordered a couple from a guy today. I can't imagine how good the flow will be with three of these running on a reef fanatic wavemaker in 30 second intervals.

I know tunzes are good but 30 second intervals are a nice feature, and until you see these mods in action its hard to believe.

Also a nice note, the way I mounted mine it looks very professional, not rigged at all. I am SO happy with this mod I can't even describe!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, nowadays it almost doesn't make sense to me to set-up a tank 100 gal. and bigger without Tunze streams. They just blow everything else on the market out of the water in terms of providing useful waterflow. They aren't perfect, but they're about the best out there now.
