What kind of equipment have metal in them? Do heaters, power heads, pumps have metal in them?

Some do. The better products use metals like titanium though which is impervious to saltwater. High quality stainless like 316 will last longer than 304 but still is not optimal for saltwater.

The shaft is metal of some sort but most of us have used them for years with no ill effects.

Yes, millions are in use in saltwater systems. They are probably the favorite powerhead of 95% of the hobby. I probably have 6 or 8 of them in use for different things.
