Eshopps R 100 Sump Surging

I just bought a eshopps R-100. Hooked it up with the supplied 3 ft flexible hose. I believe it is too long causeing water to build up in the bend and every few seconds surges and blows loads of air into the sump. Does anyone have any issues like this. I went from a home made rubber maid tub system and that worked great. So far I am not too happy.

I have a drilled reef tank and the distance from the bulk head to the top of the sump is about 10 inches. This makes it difficulty to hard plumb with PVC.

I assume a straight path down into the sump is best.

Also another question. If using the flexible hose that is supplied, does that need to be glued into the bulkhead? I am thinking of getting a 2 ft hose.

Any assistance would be great as there is nothing on eshopps web site about this.

Thanks

Problem solved. I tossed the flexible hose and plumbed it in with PVC. The hosed are designed for an external overflow.

Typically surging like that is because the flow rate through the tubing/piping can properly sustain..
In an open channel setup (air and water in pipe) we want the water to "cling" to the surface of the pipe leaving the center open for air and to not have the water stream collapse on itself and start pulling air down with it.
The turbulence due to the collapse will cause air/water to group up there until it just falls due to gravity causing the air bubbles/surging/toilet flushing type action.. The water then goes back to "trying" to cling to the walls and keep the air channel in the center open but again it fails and collapses and the process repeats..

I have the R-300 on my 180g and I have the exact same problem. I regret using the flex hose now. I’ve more than once thought about hard plumbing but wasn’t sure if it would solve the issue. Explanations above have increased my confidence. Glad I stumbled on to this.
