euphyllia compatability

excuse me for posting this anywhere but the newbie forum, but i am looking for corals to add to my plan for a 55 gallon reef, and i was wondering if all the corals in the euphyllia genus are compatible with one another. could i conceiveably house different species in this tank, or would they attack each other? Also, what would their compatibility with fish be?

I only have branching frogspawn, but have not had any problems with them and fish.

Of course, fish that nip at fleshy corals would be a bad idea - wouldn't know if they're a problem with nippers as I've completely avoided such fish.

If in contact, I'm uncertain if different varieties would sting each other. IMO, I would count on it. These corals can in some tanks develop quite long sweeper/stinger tentacles - so I'd be sure to plan in growth and room for them to expand much more than they will initially.

I have recently gotten frags of different looking frogspawn coral, that don't appear to sting my prior variety - but a different variety of Euphyllia I would expect would sting.

If you've got a reef club nearby [or even can drive somewhere for a big frag swap] it seems like Euphyllia is often propagated [esp branching forms]. The 3 Euphyllia I have are all propagated, and I'd encourage getting one this way [esp. vs. shipping] as IMO they can damage easily shipping, and it's a great way to get a healthy coral well adapted to aquaria.

The only other thing I would suggest is going for a `deeper' tank in the front-back dimension than the 55. For aquascaping, and for space for the corals to grow from the aquascape, IMO that front->back depth is great. Given reef tanks are very much about visuals, IMO worth consideration if you can bump to a 75 ... just about the same equipment, but to me, they generally look nicer.

Good luck :)

I have 3 different Euphyllia corals.
E. ancora- Hammer / Anchor Coral
E. divisa- Frogspawn / Wall / Zig-Zag Coral
E. glabrescens- Torch Coral

All are very large, Basketball for the divisa, and soccerball for the other two.

My fish population have never nipped at them.

They have only once stung another coral, The torch grew faster than I thought and wasn't paying attention. That was in my 75 gallon mixed reef. They are now housed in my 225 mixed reef. Lotsa room now.

I have been told they can touch each other, but my experience tells me otherwise.

its not a good idea to let them touch each other. some will fight and some wont. these guys seem to tolerate each othe, but i had to move a couple of specieis into other tanksw because they were stinging their neighbors.

i was thinking that i would start with small colonies. i guess i am just trying to see into the future to tell if when they get larger i will have problems.

oh, and the fish i was planning for are
1. a pair of ocellaris clowns
2. a trio of barrier reef chromis
3. a yellow watchman goby
4. a midas blenny

I have a "wall" of different types of Euphillia in my 125. They are all together and don't sting each other. It has always been my thought that Torch's, Frogspawns, and Hammers can all co-exist next to each other.

We have a torch, hammer, and frogspawn in a 75. They have never hurt each other, but the hammer was beating the poo out of a moon coral until we moved the hammer.

i have come to the conclusion that euphyllia will coexist with each other, but kick the crap out of most anything else. sound about right?
