euroreef comparative rating?????

when you look at the ratings for euroreef skimmers they give their rating then a comparative rating which is usually much higher. just wondering which is more accurate.

the reason i ask this is i am in mid build for a 540 gallon tank and was wondering if a euroreef rc500 would be enough skimmer.

thanks

I have an RS135 (an old model C6-2+) that produces a full cup each week that is black and I have to ask if any guest are coming over before I dump it in the drain because it STINKS! It's on a 55 gallon with a sump and fuge and I have 2 breeding clowns, a medium Scopas tang and I feed them 2 frozen cubes a day and 1 frozen cube to the sun coral and gorgonians. I would be real curious to see how say a 75 gallon rated version does but because mine is rated for a larger tank I can't give you real world advise except that it will depend on how much bio load you have.
The rating for an RC500 is for a tank with 500 gallons with a medium bio load which according to them is more than I would put in my tanks. What are you planning on putting in your tank?
If you plan on photosynthetic organisms such as zoas/palys, frog spawn, and about 20 small to medium fish you should be fine, actually way more than fine, but if you have inverts you have to feed such as non-photosynthetic gorgonians, sun coral, and you have about 20+ Large fish and you dump a lot of food in (I mean more than you need to) then you may not have the capacity.
The RC feeds directly from the overflow so 100% of the water that goes to it has the opportunity to be skimmed and the recirculating pump works really good. My opinion is that the RC could do more than rated and more capacity than the RS but I couldn't get Euro Reef to admit that.
I have a new RC135 for the 150 gallon we are planning but I'm not worried about the skimming ability because I don't plan on having more than 8-10 fish and I won't be over feeding that tank.
My RS will skim as much as the RC because I have a mesh mod on it. If I mesh mod the RC135 I bet it would out perform an RC180 so this may be an option for you too.
Sorry I expressed so many opinions but I hope this helped. I think Marc Melev (melev on Reef Central or melevsreef.com) has a similar setup with an Euro Reef skimmer and his tank didn't seem over stocked, but he might over feed because of the corals, so he could give his opinion.

BTW, if you haven't heard of the mesh mod, there are kits you can buy that consist of enkmat (ms?) that you zip tie to the impeller that meshes the protein with the bubbles better which is why my RS performs so well. It's cheap and my estimation is that it increases performance by at least 20%.
