A ton of factors go in to play when it comes to evaporation. Surface movement, surface space, ambient temp, tank temp, ambient humidity, using glass top or not.
I have no idea how much I go through. I run my RO/DI to a float valve in my 20 gallon auto top off tank, then I have a tunze osmolator that keeps the DT level perfect with a safety backup float switch.
The float valve in the auto top off tank doesn't have to deal with snails or salt. If it fails it won't affect the DT and I have a leak detector/alarm ($10 at Lowes/HD) next to it so I can catch any leaks early.
Automation with redundancy for your redundancies is the way to go!
1-2 gallons a day here. The air is thirsty. I have a 32 gallon Brute trash can in the closet behind my tank with a Reef Angel controller for top off. Don't usually have to worry about anything, unless i forget to fill the trash can every couple of weeks.
