Everyone was new at some point. Remember CONSTRUCTIVE criticism!!!!!!

I am new to this hobby. I know there are so many newbies as well as experinced people at Reef Central. So, what about when a newbie or anyone else for that matter comes with a question about a product, a piece of equipment, a fish, or what color to paint the back of the tank? Please share your personal knowledge or what you read in book or what your friend has done, but save the slams and cut downs for another group. I am not sure why some people choose to rip apart other people or throw out accusations and judgements. Sometimes there is no right answer or not everyone will agree. That is where respect comes into play and constructive criticism is used. Not everyone agrees on certain products or fish or whatever. That is fine and in fact welcomed! That is how people grown and mature with experience.

I only ask this: Be respectful, use constructive criticism, and keep the rude and slamming comments to yourself. If it absolutely needs to be said, then please say it in a way that will encourage.

I love Reef Central. I love reading posts and seeing what problems other people are having and how they are fixing them. I also enjoy the successes more and having those shared. Remember why you are on here and how much you love the hobby.

Thanks for listening and thanks for all of the advice out there.

Well, I have to chime in here, the reality is - as within life aside from Reefs and fish and tanks/ what works for one may not work for another. That being said, its truely a hobby that can be tinkered with to a point that even the majoirty would disagree with.

If it works dont try and fix it. If as well you pull it off- whatever it may be YOU'RE A HERO!

RC has also been good to me. I have gotten ripped a couple of times but I have asked some pretty dumb questions a time or two. LOL

Yeah I just posted a message about how great this forum is compared to the other ego filled forums. Try being a linux newbie and ask a question on a forum. Ouch.

Sorry you had a bad experience so far. Hang in there! It will get better and your tank will show it.

This is the best place to keep up to date on the latest reefing tends period. Just remember, in any large group of people there will be disagreements or conflict of personalities. It's much easier to throw jabs in a space where there are no faces attached to names. I do believe that most try and keep things on the up and up. If not the mods will intervene.

The thing is I have had a great experience on RC. But I have seen too many comments that people make where they go out of their way to post just to slam someone. I will read 20 great posts full of advice and then there is one person who says something like "don't be so dumb" or despite what you have told the thread you are a liar.

Not everyone's experience is the same. That is what makes RC so full of knowledge. I agree that somethings need to be said...but don't be a jerk. That is all I am trying to get across. Smart a$$ comments are for the designer clothing groups.

I'll tell you, in my short time here no one has been even the slightest bit rude or obnoxious when I've posted or responded to a post. This is by far the kindest forum that I've been a part of.

I am new and I love this site. Thanks RC for being here for a newbie like me.

A majority of the people here are great!!! You will also find that if one person dumps on you for your lack of knowledge or anything for that matter that others will reply to that ones feedback within the same thread. This site is fantastic!!! We all seek knowledge in here from what I have seen, even those that slam others for thier lack of knowledge, they too will need assistance from others, and eventually other will realize and stop answering their threads.

"Treat others as you wish to be treated"

I would say 98% of the users will be constructive, and try to help. You will always have that 2% who are looking to boost their ego or something, it's on every board, and some are worse then others. I think RC is the best Forum I have belonged to where that doesn't really happen a whole lot. Some people just get excited, type the response, and don't proof read it before they submit not realizing how their comments come across.

I am considering a reef tank, but may need to start with a fish only :)

Not to get off topic... If you just plain feel more confident with a fish only tank then by all means, get your feet wet that way. But there is no reason you can't start off with a reef tank. Do some research and read up on what it is you want to do. Research and don't be afraid to ask questions...

With that said... I've been slammed a couple of times here, but overall RC is one of the most positive forums I've ever been a part of. The majority of people here are helpful and I really think they want other reefers to succeed. That's why I keep coming back. That and frankly some of you guys are just plain hilarious. Everyday I read a post that just cracks me up!!! Keep it up RC!!!

Thanks all...

I have seen very few jerks on this forum. This is likely due to good moderators, as I have met many jerks who keep aquaria.

come on now, we gotta slam ya every once in awhile to keep ya'll on your toes right? :D

Somebody above already said it well, you get any large group together this kind of behavior is bound to happen. I find it's best to learn to ignore the "non-helpful" people and their comments. For the most part, people are here to learn and share their experiences in the hobby. 99% of my posts are done right here in the newbie forum trying to answer questions for ya'll since this is where I was helped so many times when I first started. I rarely visit the other forums. I do my bit to try and snare ya'll in the hobby and let the experts handle the rest, lol.
