External overflow ... ?

Looking at having a custom tank built (not for quite a while). I want it to have an external "cup" style overflow.

The thing is, how can I paint my backround black if the overflow is attached to the back of the tank?

Is there a trick or somthing I am missing?

why dont you get an internal overflow? it works better. less chance for mistakes or errors

but if you dont want to, all you have to do is tape newspaper over the sections that you dont want paint on. simple enough
