Fallow tank?

In the threads is says to leave the DT fallow for 4-6 weeks. This is usually with ICH. does this work for velvet or brook?

thanks

dynamixone,

Did the tank experience an epizootic, did you lose all the fish? How long has the tank been set up (this relates to microfauna's ability to utilize the remaining parasites into the food chain).
Nobody is going to be able to give you more than a "best guess" on this. The only studies that I know of were with Cryptocaryon, and they indicated a 6 week minimum time frame (still viable at 42 days if I recall).
If it were my tank, I would wait 6 weeks since the last fish died and aggressively quarantine any new fish that I added to it.
Some people subscribe to the idea that there is no such thing as a disease free tank in regards to protozoans. I agree that there are no disease free tanks in regards to path. bacteria, but that there are disease free tanks in regards to metazoans such as flukes. I'm on the fence in regards to disease free tanks for protozoans.

sorry about the lack of info.

I have a 120G that has been up for 2 months. this was a direct upgrade from a established 5 YO 55g reef. the 55g was disease free. I never had one breakout of anything and never lost a fish for 4 years. just did waterchanges and never added any other fish.

all my existing fee moved in and were fine

1 YT, 1 Foxface, 1 argi angel, 2 clownfish, 1 Goby, they all did great and nerver and issue.

new tank was going good. no issues tank was started with 25g of original tank water and 65 pounds of 5 YO live rock. I moved the fuge from the old tank to the new tank.

then after a month I added a juvenile clown tang.... big mistake.... NO QT! he started showing signs and it went down hill from there.

I setup my old 55 as a QT tank. I lost all of the fish except for the foxface! he is doing well in hypo and wont stop eating.

the issue is my DT is now a killing machine. my beautiful new aga 120 is a haven for my shrimp and bta. there loving it. but I am afraid to add new fish and start the cycle again.

another note:

Maybe its me since I havent been at the LFS alot until i got my new tank. everything looks or is sick. it didnt seem this way in the past. but for now after this mess, I am sticking with my new fav LFS. Liveaquaria.com

I cant seem to find any info on leaving the tank fallow for velvet??

is it basically the same rule as ICH? I am at 29 days fallow. my juvi imperator is starting to show signs on HLLE, from what i suspect is the not so friendly or ideal qt tank conidtions. I have read that getting the fish into the DT as soon as possible will help with the HLLE. I just dont want the fish to get hit with a months worth of starving ich or velvet.

Try soaking 4 or 5 drops of pure garlic oil on your rozen foods and feeding it 2 to three times a week for a couple of weeks or so, and once or twicw a week after, until you have all fish added and stable, this is great for ich and for fish that are not eating well. Sorry about your losses. You get attatched to the little guys. Hard to lose them.

I would leave the tank empty for at least two months. I lost 3/4 of my fish to Oodinium in January. I left the tank fallow and hypo for tow months. Ive now had fish back in the DT for three weeks and everyone is doing great.
