Feather duster with a soft tube

I bought a feather duster at petco (don't scold, it was $5 and is a pretty purple-I'm a college student). I think they were running copper or something nasty.

The problem is that its tube is very thin and soft. When it retracts quickly, the opening will bend in and some of the tube farther down was transparent, although it has mostly abandoned that part to build new (this new section, however, is also pretty soft). It dropped its crown about a week after coming home and is regrowing very well. It is just fine otherwise, always out and spread wide.

I purchased it more than a month ago, and I was hoping for more improvement by now than what I've seen. I keep it mostly buried in the sand so that it is more secure. Is there anything else I can do to help it aside from keeping the tank clean and params normal?

Thanks!

Nope. If it rebuilt its crown and is rebuilding its tube then all is good. Otherwise there isn't much you can do specifically for it. its almost impossible to say for sure what size material it feeds on, but if you have any fine particled food mixes then you might be able to get healthier quicker that way.
