feedback on pumps

Anyone have experience with a Velocity T4 or T? pump? I read they ran very hot which is a concern. The compact size and a flow rate between 1100 and 1300 is good for my application but I would like to make an informed buying decision. Any thoughts on other pumps?

Velocity pumps do run warm. You may want to look into Gen-X PCX-40 pumps, or Blueline 40 (I believe that is the correct model). Both are very quiet and workhorses.

i use the t4 for my return and on a 210g i didnt notice any added heat issues. and the pump is dead silent.

I looked at the Sequence pumps but the flow rate is too high. My return is coming into a 1" Sea Swirl with a maximum flow rate of 1150 GPH.

I am watching a Gen-X PCX-40 and an Iwake MD-55RLT on e-bay right now.

If someone has one they want to sell let me know.

(Pump)(GPH)(MAX. Head)(Pressure rated)(Inlet)(Outlet)(Watts)

Iwaki MD 40RLXT/1344/15'/No/1"/1"/218w
Iwaki MD 55RLXT/1104/27'/Yes/1"/1"/185w
Little Giant 3MDQX/1000/18'/No/1"/1"/104w
Little Giant 4MDQX/1225/17'/No/1"/1"/150w
PCI PCX-40/1190/21'/Yes/3/4"/3/4"/98w
Velocity T4/1225/18'/No/1"/1"/140w
Reeflo Tarpon/1440/23'/Yes/1"/3/4"/175w

Depending on how your closed loop is arranged and based on your output desires , I'd choose the PCX40. I've got a couple that have been running since 1995. They are almost bullet proof.

With the exception of the Tarpon and 55RXLT I have used or still use all the pumps listed above.

Thanks Dave, this is great information. I am building a 1" DIY intake that will flow through the pump as well as a chiller and return to the tank through a 1" Sea Swirl; any reason to have a pressure rated pump for this application? I don't think so, but I thought I would ask.

Because you are running it through a chiller and a Sea Swirl I would want a pressure rated pump. The pumps output would need to be tailored to the chillers flow rating ( including all the restrictions it will encounter) and you can use the calculator found on RC to best determine the pump size you will need based on your layout.

i have a dart running through a 1" seaswirl. i also have 3 3/4" outlets. it works fine.

I have a Hammerhead running through six 1/2" Sea Swirls and three 1" outlets, I win.:eek1:

I am at work. I'm putting together orders.

You can cut it up and use it in the reactor or you can roll it around the center tube.

roll it around? hmmmm. i never would have thought of that. so it doesn't matter if i have the white side in a certain direction?

dave, the man with the answers.

i've been hitting you up for info since 1994. you know i sold chris his first reef tank way back when?? i had forgotten until he told me a couple months back. and i bought that tank from you.
