I'd seen a few mentions of taking your clam out of the tank and placing it in a bowl to feed it (well, bowl in the water, then clam in bowl, then bowl out of water). We have a new maxima that is quite small so I attempted to remove it from the tank to feed it. It never did clear the water, and it was hard to tell whether most of the clearing that did occur was from settling or feeding. It didn't ever open up all the way, which isn't too surprising considering that the lighting in my dining room doesn't compete with the lighting in my tank.
I probably had him out of the tank for 15 minutes, at which point I was getting concerned for temperature and water chemistry in the small bowl.
