Feeding Rotifer Diet

Hi,

I am attempting to raise rotifers (so far without much success) and am starting to use Rotifer Diet.

It comes frozen, so I mixed a bit of it with saltwater (1.025) in a bigger container and put it in the fridge. how long will it keep?
I am unsure how much to feed and how often. Do you tint the water green with it or use less because it is more concentrated?

Thanks

This stuff is cheap and has yeast, which makes cultures crash easier due to the fact that yeast feeds a host of microorganisms that eat your rotifers and foul the water very quickly. Best food is instant algae by Reed Mariculture, or grow your own greenwater with starter culture from local university or Florida Aqua Farms Algae Disks.

Hi,

I think that the stuff I have is Instant Algae Rotifer Diet from Reed Mariculture. Is this the same as the instant algae you are recommending or is it different stuff?

I do have access to some phyto and could start culturing my own if that is the best way go.

Thanks again for your feedback.

To the best of my knowledge, Rotifer diet comes from Reed Mariculture and does not contain yeast. It is an algae concentrate but it is not viable for starting cultures since it has been frozen. You should tint the water green so that there is a slight amount of green left the next time you feed. Feed 2 or 3 times a day. The actual amount needed will depend on your culture volume and rotifer density. If you use the calculator on the Reed website I believe you will be underdosing and your culture will get very thin. Trial and error is probably your best bet, just don't let them run out of food and don't overdose as you will foul your culture.
