Fellow Noobs: do NOT underestimate testing your water

I let testing my water go since I've been locked home because I didn't have the capacity to obtain RODI water or salt and I essentially have a FOWLR tank that's been maturing.

I purchased an RODI system to start water changes. I tested the salt water, pH a little over 8, which is where my tank always runs. I decide to test my tank too last minute even though I usually don't before water changes. My test kit read the lowest reading - 7.4. Since its API, that means it's either 7.4 or lower. I can imagine that changing out 5+ gallons today as I planned would have ended in disaster.

Looks like all the forum posts about not wanting pineapple sponges because they can soak up alkalinity had some merit.

Don't wave testing your water. It could save your pets' lives.
