Filtration on Saltwater Tank

Hello, I am new to this..

I am upgrading my 75g sw tank (is still cycling) to a 125g SW tank.

SO my question is on what filtration is needed on my saltwater tank? It is going to be only Aggressive fish and live rock (there is hermits, crabs, snails, and various hitch hikers in there now but I don't care if there is casualties).

I have live rock, and a protein skimmer so far. I also have a big canister filter I was using on this tank when it was fresh, but heard these can be Nitrate factories and was wondering if I should use it or not?

Didnt mean to post this 3 times.. Dont know how to delete.. Still new to this

The canister filter can be used effectively if it is cleaned regularly. Most people just don't keep up with the cleaning. Most reefers do not use it as a filter or put bio balls in them due to the nutrient problems you have heard of. Some do use it to hold media like GFO & carbon which you may or may not need for a FOWLR tank.

Not sure if you have a sump but I would plan one if not. Then I would run filter socks, changed every 2-3 days. I would also have a ball of cheato or a ATS.

Thats it.

The live rock combined with the protein skimmer and regular water changes is really all you need IMO. When you do perform a water change though, make sure to either stir up your sand bed or vacuum it on a regular basis too. Removing all that poop, leftover food etc will definitely help in the long run. The canister filter can be used to run GAC, GFO or perhaps a sponge in if need be, but like mentioned above if this is going to be a FOWLR tank these might not be needed. Keep it simple. GL.

Yes I do have a sump, which brings me to another question.. The 125g tank I have is NOT drilled.. Should I have it drilled or just buy a HOB overflow?

HOB always has some risk of failure so it depends if you are comfortable with that. Drilling is fine but make sure the glass is not tempered.
