Fin rot? Something popped up in QT.

I received two trios of anthias from DD a little over two weeks ago. They are all in a 40g QT tank where I treated with CP and two rounds of prazipro prophylacticly. The trio of bartlett's anthias are doing great but each of the lyretails have unfortunately died. The last lyretail to go was the only one that showed any kind of physical symptom before dying. I knew it was pretty much too late but I did catch her and gave her a formalin bath hoping it would help but she was dead this morning. The tail became frayed/rotted which none of the other fish exhibited any signs of.

My current concern is how to proceed with the other trio of bartlet's anthias while they are in QT. Should I treat the remaining anthias with anything or just continue to observe?

Thanks!

if these are the ones you're talking about, sounds like you already treated? if they are doing great, then just continue to observe,

Sorry if I wasn't clear. They were treated with CP and prazipro prior to any symptoms. The female lyretail in the pics is the one that exhibited the tail rot prior to death. The bartlett's anthias all look alright but since they were exposed to whatever this was I'm wondering if I should treat for fungal or bacterial infections.

I just went through the exact same thing with my Lyretails purchased two weeks ago. I had three and one died after exhibiting the same symptoms as you. I gave it a FW dip to see if it had flukes and it did. I'm guessing yours had flukes too. Flukes cause these symptoms and then death if not caught quickly enough.

I still have two remaining. I gave PRazi and observed for the next 20 mins. I saw flukes drop off one. It had a slightly rotted fin. Since then its fin is beginning to recover.

My suggestion would be to do another 2 rounds of Prazi, 5 days apart, and observe for flukes dropping off your Bartletts. Then I'd wait another 30 days to observe they are symptom free. That is what I plan to do. I don't want to take any risk of infecting my DT.

Interesting.. I didn't notice anything drop off when I put the anthia through a formalin dip last night but I wasn't necessarily looking for anything. Didn't know flukes could be responsible for fin damage like that. The first two lyretails died fairly quick but I'm surprised flukes could have been the culprit on the third since I had done two rounds of prazipro 5 days apart at that point.

The owner of my LFS said that a lot Anthias and Chromis were coming in with Uronema. This might be the case with yours. Hard to say with the pics, but kind looks like they are also losing color.

Ugh I really hope it's not uronema. I would have thought that the CP treatment would have knocked out possible uronema though. I do have metroplex on hand to try as well if it any of the Bartlett's anthias start showing signs.

There is quite a long thread on flukes that is worth reading. It spans many years with many people having the same symptoms you and I saw. Here is the link

Given that you had Lyretails with the same symptoms as me, purchased at the same time, and mine had confirmed flukes, I'd say its a good bet yours do too. Prazi needs to be done in a precise order to get rid of flukes.

I don't know much about uronema but reading about those symptoms, the symptoms you describe match more closely with the fluke symptoms described in the thread linked above.

Uronema symptoms are readily apparent - typically a reddish wound on the flank of the fish. I don't see that in the pictures. IMO it's either flukes or bacterial in nature.

I'm not sure what flukes look like but I did see some small debris drop from the fish after a fw dip. I really couldn't capture much with my phone..

I went with another round of prazipro.. 5mL per 20g as directed on the instructions. Skimmer is currently off. Planning to follow up with another dose in 5 days.. sound good? Wondering if I should also hit up another medication for possible bacterial infections. I have malachite green and methylene blue on hand if either of those are recommended.

I can't tell from your pics. They turn opaque and kinda crawl/drop off. Here is a super closeup of one in a glass container.

I've read there can be opportunistic bacterial infection secondary to flukes. I opted not to treat for this since my remaining didn't show any signs.
