Well right now i got 4 damsels, live rock, and sand. The pics i'll get tomorrow when i get home from school.

John why did you get the damsels?

Tell us about what size tank, lighting, filtration, and what you plan on keeping in it.

I got the damsels because I dont have money for live sand.
Right now I have 50/50 lighting,a normal filter lol I really dont know, and I plan on keeping soft corals and for fish probably clowns and dont know what else yet havent thought about it yet.

I am not sure I understand this??? If you are refering to starting your cycle you could easily do that with a piece of raw shrimp. Works just as well and also does not put the animals through the stress of going through a cycle. Live sand however is not related to this but does help boost the process.

they just throw shrimp in there to decay and help start your cycle process. A lot of people starting doing it also because they didnt have to try to catch the damels after they have cycled the tank.

Not to mention the cruelty involved with putting any fish thru the cycling process. Preculafreak, if your intention was to use the damsels to "cycle" your tank, I'd consider taking them back and doing it a different way. There is enough die off on live rock alone in most circumstances to start a cycle without the need to put four fish thru a cycle.

Take it or leave it, this is just my $.02 on it.

I still have the damsels that I bought for my 75G when I first set it up......Geeze, they must be...like 6 or 8 years old. they're mean, though.....the little bastards bite me when I stick my hands in the tank.

I'm not sure if I would call their stay in my tank cruel. I'm sure they've had a better life in my reef tank, then at petco.

No, I'd have to agree that their entire stay as a whole would then be a better existence than Petco. However, if you did put them through the cycle, yes, I would consider that unneeded cruelty. Any fish that has to endure the toxicity involved with cycling is surely put through stress that it shouldn't have to endure.

Granted, if you did that 6-8 years ago, it was much more common practice to use the 'damsel method'. Nowadays, though, its been pretty much ruled out as a good method for cycling the tank.

Typically die off from the LR is enough to get a cycle going. If you would like a cup of LS, I'd be more than happy to give you some to seed your tank.:)
