Fingered Dragonet

That's a beautiful picture. I'm seeing a lot of people using flash on fish. Doesn't it hurt their eyes? I know it hurts my eyes..

Good question so I just googled it...no real answers other than it might irritates momentarily as it would a human.

That being said, I'm not firing a full power flash directly on the fish. The flash is set to a low output and its usually always at a 45 to the tank.

Hope this helps answer your ??

Mitchell, Yes it does, thanks. Flash always either whites out my tanks, or shows streaks on the glass. ( streaks that can't be seen with the naked eye ).
Is that Dragonet eating something? Looks like he found a taste for nudis :D

Hi there I just returned from photographing him again. That is the color of his mouth...he has nothing in it. I will have to wait until this evening to see what the new images look like. I'm not satisfied with the sharpness of the eye in this photo. Once again flash was set at around 1/32 power at a 45 at about 2" away from glass (For today's shoot) stay tuned for image.

I would love to get one for my cube tank but they require a larger well established system. Basically they are a mandarins big brother from what Ive been told needing pods to keep well fed

Yes I will certainly explain.

I use a Nikon SB800 flash off camera attached via a cord. I mount the flash on a stand and it's never any more than a foot or two away from me.

The flash has the snap on diffuser attached to it.

I am using the flash in manual mode at around 1/32 to 1/64 at a 45 degree angle to the glass.

Or I hand hold the flash OVER the tank.

Iso on the camera is around 200 to 400

Hope this helps some.
Mitchell
