Chromis of the usually dwindle down to one strong individual over time, I had a successful group of 5 Chromis Viridis for a few months, then they started attacking each other, killing 3 of them, and the remaining two perished of unknown cause, along with a male Chrysiptera Cyanea.

You might post this over on snorvich's fish compatibility thread. He always gives great advice: http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2068112

Blue reef chromis are schooling fish it says there recommened to be in a group rather than an individual. So maybe i shouldnt get a green chromis but i know blue reef chromis need more then 1

I had a group of Blue Chromis (Chromis Cyanea), and they also dwindled down to one. Unless the tank is large enough (say 6ft x 6ft or more), then they usually attack each other (In a tank that is large enough they don't have to worry as much about competition) I think the websites that say that they are schooling fish either do it because they are that way in the wild (kind of, I'd say they live in groups), they have a group of them in stock, or to get more money because you buy more than one.

I have had one blue reef chromis for about 4 years now. He does not seem to mind.

Chromis will always whittle themselves down to one. They do not school in the aquarium, as schooling is a defense behavior against predation. They do just fine as single individuals.

I have always found this to be true in the past. I'm trying one last time with 8 blue/green chromis. Only difference this time is that I have an auto feeder so will be feeding 6-8 times a day, it might make no difference at all but fat fish generally seem to be less aggressive.
