Today I found my shrimp on a large piece of "meat" of what used to be a fish. I'm fairly certain it was my mandarin since I cant find him anymore. It sucks but I gave him a shot since I saw the LFS had him for quite a while and I know they dont have many pods in their fish tanks, I've been dosing phyto pretty heavily and he would be my only pod eater in the tank. For him to die within 2 days of being in my tank I thought would be wierd but not totally impossible if he was very starved from the LFS.
Then just now I realized I've not seen my cleaner wrasse since saturday night. He was crazy active, always trying to clean everything and everyone in the tank. Was eating, no worries there.
I cannot find any trace of him anywhere so hopefully he didnt die under a rock or else I'll have some fat hermits and shrimp. Now that I think about it...I do remember seeing some small piece of flesh/meat (like the size you would feed an anemone) in the tank yesterday that I've not put in there. I recently had an anemone accident with a power head a couple weeks ago and I thought it might have been part of that, maybe I missed a small piece in the rocks.
I've checked all over the tank with a flashlight looking for fish jerky but didnt find anything. It's very possible a dog got to it first though.
What should I be looking for in case of predators. I'm 99% certain I wouldnt have a mantis since everything in the tank was started from dry rock, or any predators at that, but 2 fish in 36 hours is wierd.
Any other ideas what would be going on?
I bought the 2 fish that are missing at the same time. I also bought a third at the same time, a cleaner goby, but he's so tiny and skiddish it's normal not to see him all day, but I do usually see him come out within a 36 hour period. I've not seen him in the past 48 hours either, but I'm not writting that off yet.
If it were a predator, my golden head goby would be next on the list with his lifestyle of going between, in and out of all the rock cavities.
