Fish dying while being treated for Oodinium

Some, or all, of those fish left may never get sick and you may be able to add other fish. I have seen fish develop an "apparent" immunity. But not all will and if something upsets the balance in the tank velet may roar up again. I would start thinking of a backup plan for when the day arrives. I know it is a pain. Velvet is one of the main reasons I QT everything.

Yeah, velvet (and brooklynella) are deadlier and more contagious than ich. But ich seems to be all you hear about; that's why I think its often mis-diagnosed. I agree completely on leaving the tank fishless. But it sounds like that isn't an option. I haven't heard of any "super strains' of velvet, like there seems to be with ich, that can stay dormant for long periods. Because velvet is so quick and contagious; you may just got lucky and have some fish with enough resistance to miss it. I've seen this happen on several occasions. BTW: there are many more reasons to QT, disease/parasite prevention is just the most obvious.

Just an update: The purple tang is doing great in the hospital tank. I may start picking up new fish soon and putting them into the QT as well to be ready to restock the display in a few weeks. the few fish that were left in the display are still doing fine as well even though I have only been feeding the tank about once every week.

Glad to hear about your PT, I know he was a favorite. You still have fish in the tank that had oodinium and weren't treated? Why feeding so seldom?
I wouldn't add new fish to QT; you would have to restart the timing of the treatment for the fish that are already there; the new fish could carry parasites to the fish in QT. With fish still in the DT, I'd leave the treated fish in QT as long as you possibly can; at least 6 weeks. Even if the untreated fish are somehow resistant to the oodinium, it takes that long to be sure there aren't dormant forms of the parasites still in the tank. Watch the untreated fish closley and at 6 weeks, you should be OK. Then think about new fish.

yeah, there is a sixline wrasse, 3 chromis, and a firefish that never got sick. they were all treated with a few "reef safe" meds like prazi-pro, ick-attack, and microb-lift herbana, but they never showed any signs of the disease, and infact the sixline lived thru the Oodimium outbreak I had last year as well. I am feeding so infrequently because I went without running the skimmer for a week while trying to fix everything before catching the fish out, and was way over-feeding trying to get the fish thru it. I am just trying to get my nutreants down as many of my SPS have browned out. I am going to QT a fish or two for several weeks and then try introducing them one at a time and see what happens.

I didn't read anything about you using an antibiotic. Anytime you use copper you should use an antibiotic as the copper can decrease the immune system (as can stress of being in a QT and under attack by parasites.) As the parasites leave the body, the fish could pass away from a secondary infection. No point in that.

I use a broad-spectrum antibiotic unless I know if I'm dealing with a gram-positive or a gram-negative bacteria.

Yeah, I am thinking that is what might have killed off the yellow tang, and golden rabbit fish in the QT. I will keep that in mind for next time. Luckily the purple tang is doing great.
