I am in the market for a fisheye lens. I have NO idea what to get, or where to buy. Suggestions would be much appreciated! Thanks in advance.

I have the nikkor 10.5mm fisheye and I'm a pretty big fan of it, really fun to use.

I was going to post a new thread and then I saw this one from a couple of days ago -

I'm also looking for a fisheye lens -with a Nikon mount. I was looking at those cheap single element magnifiers that screw into your filter threads, but then I came across a 8mm f/3.5 sold under a variety of brands (Bower, Pro-optic etc.) It shoots full frame 180 degrees on a DX sensor and only costs $289 from Adorama. Manual focus, but apparently will couple to the meter on my D300.

What I'd like to do with it is take full-tank shots of my exhibits that are 4' wide by 4' tall (mostly). Distortion of straight lines isn't much of an issue - but I want to be able to get the whole front of the tank in the shot and the huge DOF is important.

Has anyone used one of these lenses for full tank shots? How did it work?

Thanks,

Jay

Well... do you want a circular fisheye or rectilinear fisheye? Nikon has the 10.5 DX fish for your D80, and they go for around $550 on the used market. Other than that, your next choice would be a Sigma or Tamron, but if you're gonna invest that much money on a lens, I suggest you continue saving and just buy the Nikon glass. JMO

Thanks for the suggestions!!! I am still looking. In the Cincinnati area, it isn't that easy to find a fisheye at the camera shops around town.

Rae,

Since the fisheye would most likely only be used for specialty shots, I wouldn't invest in Nikon glass myself. Here is the link to the $289 fisheye that I had spec'd out:

That said, in doing more research, it became apparent to me that I didn't really want a fisheye as much as I needed an ultra-wide angle. So - I ordered a Tokina 12-24 for $399 and it is supposed to arrive today!

Check out the tokina 10-17mm in nikon mount. Should be available for the price you are looking for.

as stated before the Tokina 12-24 is an awesome super wide angle option if that turns out to be what you are looking for!
