fish only filtration

what type of filtration should i use in a fish only tank? does it need the samr type pf set up as a reef tank or does i need something different?

You could run it with liverock, a protein skimmer, and a fuge (like a reef) if you use lots of liverock and don't overstock the tank.

For my 125g FO I chose to have a combination of 120 lbs. of liverock, a wet/dry filter, a protein skimmer and a small area in my sump for macroalgae. This is my first FO tank and I currently have a dogface puffer and a foxface. I plan to have a few more decent sized fish in this tank also. I wanted to have the fallback of the wet/dry filter as opposed to not having enough filtration. These fish are definitely not reef fish. I feed this tank a good amount of food for two fish so I think I made the right decision.

So, it can be done more ways than one. Maybe some others will chime in with their filtration setups.
Good luck

With a FO I would just do a properly sized wet/dry & a nice skimmer. I went for MANY many years (10+ actually) w/o a skimmer & never had a problem, just did h20 changes monthly :) Anyways, if you get a filter big enough you will never have problems!!!

If you go the FOWLR route then you can do what saltymember did. Wet/Dry, LR, etc....

O yea.... I like using a cartridge filter like ocean clear on my FO tanks as well. The PITA part is you have to clean them often so they do not become a bio-filter but they help out taking junk out of the water. I am hooking up 2 ocean clear canisters on my 260 g

protein skimmer and live rock #1, some type of refugium (I have a in tank one I hang), canister filter for water polishing, movement, and carbon

on the other side---
I've had a 20g up and running for a yr w/ just a pengiun 100 and macro algae and live rock w/ no problems--- actually healthier than the big tank

On my 265 gallon tank I have live rock in it, a lifereef skimmer, a 55 gallon sump, a 55 gallon refug (more liverock and macro), ozone (which never runs), and a 80watt UV. This is probably over kill, but I never have any problems. I also use carbon. I change the water about 15% a month.

what i went with is a 75gal sump/fug with an asm skimmer rated for a 200 gal tank, going to put sand, rocks, and macro algea, and i'm going to get a UV light. it's for a 150 gal tank so i think i'll be alright. thanks for all the feedback.
