fishy smell

Every now and then, my sumps have that "fishy smell" to them. Not the normal little hint when you put your nose right to the water, but the kind you can pickup when your standing near it. I would like to try and figure out what is causing it and how to remove the odor. I'm not sure if its the lack of motion in the water in the sump or if its a product of decay like if over feeding or something. I checked my parameters, and everything is in line. I have activated carbon in the sump but I believe that does more for chemical removal. Well any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks

if my carbon is more than 2 weeks old i will start getting a smell.at a month it is very noticable.feeding cyclopeeze and frozen foods seem to bring it on a little more than usual.a water change may be in order .

There are a few ways of dealing with it

1) As Dan said adding a carbon filter to the tank
2) The smell also comes from the air that is expelled from the skimmer. Running the air through a carbon filter will go a long way in reducing the smell
3) More ventilation in the room
4) If you have any water spills or damp spots that have not fully dried can also contribute to this smell.
