Flame angel not looking too hot.

We just got him yesterday. Put him in the QT and he seemed fine for the most part. He swam all around the QT. We tried to feed him a bit yesterday and today with no luck.

Today he is mostly swimming directly under my over flow box. I also noticed some white blotches on him today that I didn't see yesterday. It almost looks like dead skin that you'd get after you've been sun burned.

All other fish in the QT are doing fine. I've seen no bickering or fighting between the other fish. All other fish have eaten.

The only difference between yesterday and today is that I treated with Prazi Pro last night.

Any idea's on what could be going on?

Did you buy him at a LFS or online? At least with a LFS you can ask them how long have they had him...Maybe ammonia burn? But the fins and eyes are fine, so ?? Maybe damage from when he was caught or trying to go into too small a hole?? if its real red and raw you may want to think about anti-biotics or melafix.

I would not be treating with prazi for this.

I don't know what it is, but i would be more inclined to using a bacterial/fungal medication for this.

Very interested in hearing if anyone knows what this is.

Good luck.

I was treating prazi pro in the QT as a normal preventative, not because he was showing these signs. I checked amm and it was 0.

A couple people in another thread thought it might be Marine Velvet and suggested copper treatment ASAP.

Seeing that the fish was getting worse (it had moved from under the overflow box to hanging out at the top of the tank) and I had no other leads I went with that. Sounds like Velvet would give a fish difficulty breathing and make them become lethargic.

Unfortunately the fish didn't make it. I transferred him to a hospital tank and dosed cupramine a little bit at a time over the corse of 2-3 hours till I got a reading of .25.

He was alive up until 6am from what I could tell. Woke up at 7am and nothing.

I just hope the other fish in the QT remain ok. Not sure whether to give them cupramine treatment or just leave them be for now.

Flame angels are the most sensitive fish to copper that I know of, and I'm a big fan of Cupramine.Cupramine at .25 could easily have killed him; they are the only fish that I won't treat prophetically at at least .30. Skin sloughing like this is often the main symptom of brooklynella. Did you see any white spots on the fish at all? If not, you can probably rule out velvet. It does not look like Velvet to me. I'd Google both of these parasites (including images) and see if anything reminds you of your fish. Brooklynella and Velvet require completely different meds(copper for Velvet, formalin for brooklynella)and if it is one of these, all fish will need to be treated ASAP. Both are quick & deadly & very contagious.

Uggh looks like it is defiantly Brooklynella. And boy does it show up QUICK. My coral beauty looked fine yesterday and today it has that skin sloughing look.

Unfortunately I don't have any effing formalin and it's 10pm....

It's still eating and swimming fine for now.

The flame deteriorated fast. It became lethargic and would not eat at all. I hope the coral will last long enough for me to get treated.

I couldn't find a definite answer on the flame so I treated with cupramine fast and furious because it was looking worse and worse and I had no other options.

Assuming this is brooklynella, remove the copper with carbon ASAP. The CB is quite sensitive to it. Unfortunately, Formalin is the only cure for Brooklynella that i know of. this is a very nasty parasite. I'm surprised your fish have lasted since my last post on the 21st.

The CB is still in QT. Not the hospital tank. There is no copper in the QT.

He is degrading fast. He is no swimming at the top of the tank. We have 3 LFS's. The one that opens at 10am did not have any Formalin. The other 2 open at noon. They are also about 90 minutes away give or take and I doubt they will have Formalin. I don't think the CB is going to last out. So far the Tang and Tail spot also in Qt are OK... But I think it's only a matter of time.

I will order Formalin online if no LFS has it, but I doubt the CB will make it before it gets here.

Coral beauty passed away over night. The only thing I could get my hands on was QuiCK Cure. I think it's only 4-5% formalin. It didn't work. I've ordered some Formail-MS online and it should be here in a couple days. I will treat my 2 surviving fish asap on it's arrival.

Very very disappointed with the LFS. When the flame took a turn for the worst we gave them a call. They claimed it was stress related from the travel home and that flames are finicky creatures (which they are). They denied a disease (which I didn't believe and treated with copper any way) and claimed the other fish would be fine.

Because the CB was eating and not being lethargic, and the fact I wasn't too sure on what the cause was, I was hoping that would be the case. However, it eventually showed up on the CB a week later and within 24 hrs the fish was as good as dead. Called the LFS, they didn't sell formalin. They claimed it was stress related again even though the fish was in my established 37g QT tank, all parameters are in check, the fish was eating like a pig and constantly picking at the LR.... Once again they say my other fish should be ok (yea right)

Anything to put blame on me instead of admitting selling the sick fish. (end rant).

If anyone has any formalin experience and can share it with me I opened a thread here

Hey BigGimp,

Not sure if you got some different type of medication called "quick cure" also, but the AP pro brand quick cure is definitely 37% formaldehyde. I've used it on several occasions in the past. Also, formalin from my understanding is a solution that contains 37% formaldehyde.

So if it is AP pro brand QuICK Cure you have, i would not wait to treat ur other fish because what you have is better since it also contains MG (40%). Despite it having MG, make sure you aerate a ton, especially if you wind up using straight up Formalin. I believe i read a credible source somewhere that the MG actually helps in keeping oxygen dissolved in the water, but don't quote me on that. Also keep the tank or container you are administering it dark.
