Flame Angel

Instead of me buying another tank i'm gonna convert my 135 into a seahorse tank. Do you guys or gals think that a flame angel in that big of a tank would be ok with seahorses and pipes? Or maybe a different dwarf angel would be more compatible?

I wouldn't say it wouldn't work for sure. In that large a tank, it is possible the angel could coexist long term with the seahorses. Especially in a tank that is large enough that you could feed different ends of the tank and avoid food competition. It is certainly a risk, but I don't think it is a completely unreasonable idea.

I would just be prepared to take out all the rock if you need to catch and remove the angel. Either that, or be prepared to move your seahorses to another tank if necessary.

I have a juvenile rock beauty angel in a tank with seahorses. Other than being an aggressive eater, she does not interact with the seahorses at all. I do not plan this to be a long term arrangement, the angel is going into my 210, which is waiting on a part. This species has a dismal record of survival in captivity, so I put it into the most sponge- and macro-filled tank I have, which also happens to house seahorses. After more than a month, the angel does not seem to have adversely affected the seahorses at all.

LisaD, if you read this, what is the difference between a rock beauty angel and a coral beauty angel? Is it the same fish? I have been seeing a coral beauty at my lfs that is absolutly beautiful. They have it in with the seahorses. I mentioned that it may not belong in with the seahorsed to an employee. He said that it is fine in there. That it doesn't bother the horses at all? What are your thoughts on that?

My flame has turned from being a nice tank mate in my reef show tank to becoming very aggressive. My flame has begun to harass everyone no matter how big they are. I view Flames and Coral Beauties as hit or miss in regards to their temperment. They are beautiful fish, and always mioving but Im not sure if I would risk one in with my seahorses.

I have a flame with 2 seahorses and a pipefish, and they've been together about a year. The flame does pick on them alot, but all seems well on the whole.

Sarahbab - coral beauty and rock beauty are two totally different fish. :) Coral beauty is Centropyge bispinosus, a pretty fish, as others are saying, can be aggressive once established in the tank and if it starts to think its the boss.

Rock beauty's are Caribbean natives, Holacanthus tricolor, typical angel shape with yellow overall body color and dark black shading on the body and dorsal/anal fins starting after the pectoral fins and leading to the caudal peduncle. The dorsal/anal fins are usually edged in yellow and there is often a dark spot on the head. A bit bigger fish too, and even less suited to an SH tank imo.

thanks for answering Sarah. yes, the Rock Beauty gets 8+ inches as an adult and is known for being pugnacious, even for an angel. IMO, angels in general are not a good risk with seahorses, but the dwarf Centropyge angels (like the Coral Beauty) would have a better chance of being compatible with seahorses, given a large enough tank, than a large or medium sized angel. angels are not easy to catch if they prove to be a problem, so be careful.

texaslonghorn99, anything picking on seahorses "a lot" is very likely to stress them to death. seriously, you need to separate the angel from the seahorses if it is picking on them at all.
