Flame Angelfish

Hi everyone. Okay I need some advice! I would love to add a Flame Angel to my tank. I have tried several in the last few years...and non make it past a week. I am sure it is has been a mixture of bad specimans and also low salinity tanks going to my 1.025 salinity. So I haven't tried in a long time. Do any of you guys or gals know a good LFS in the STL area that gets in good Flame Angels AND most importantly keeps them at a salinity of 1.024-1.025 in their tanks. I only buy fish that come from at least 1.024 salinity. Thanks a bunch! I look forward to what you guys have to say.

I can't speak to the salinity of their tanks, but I've had nothing but success with the fish that I've bought both from both Gateway and The Corner Reef. I drip acclimate what I bring home for an hour or two and have never had a casualty within the first few weeks with their fish.

They both have pretty big selections and if they don't have a flame angel now, they can get one for you very quickly.

I have one in QT and I have to say keep your finges crossed. I feel like he is a finicky eater. He looks good, but I feel like I am deep in the woods. Definitely seems like a shy fish and a little stressed. Got him on Thursday last week and put him in QT.

I've got one I picked up from Seascape as well.

It was the smallest Flame Angel I'd ever seen.

It ate in the store, so I took it home and put it in QT for 30 days with a couple of other fish. I've currently got it in my 120 with several fish and several LPS, Zoa's, and a small clam. I feed heavy, and it's been a model citizen for about 3 months now.

I'm hoping that the frequent heavy feedings will curb the desire to nip at corals and the clam.

How is he doing now? What was salinity of the bag water before you acclimated him to your QT? What is the salinity of your QT?

So just curious...did you set the salinity in your QT tank to match their salinity? If not what was the salinity of your QT and how long did you drip the fish before putting them into your QT?

I keep the QT salinity levels lower than NSW,(around 1.020-1.023).
Dropping down in salinity isnt a real problem, it can be done on fish pretty quickly. Like down to 1.004 in less than 24 hours without issue. You just need to ensure pH is stable and the same as what it's going to.

Raising salinity is a whole different issue, and should be done slowly over a period of several weeks.

I drp acclimate for maybe an hour. LFS water does not go into my tanks at all.

Flame Angels are pretty tough, you'd be surprised/horrified at how they ship.

I match salinity in my QT to the water in the bag. After temperature acclimation I open the bag, test the salinity of bag water, set the QT salinity and put the fish in QT. Seems to work much better.
