flame angels reef safe?

I have an empty 75g aquarium that i wont set up for a while, the 2 fish i really like are flame angels and mandarin dragonets and would like to get one of each. regarding the flame angels, i have read that they are either not reef safe or with caution, is this true? have any of u had flame angels in a reef? any care information would be very helpful.also any info on he dragonets would be useful as well.

I have had Flames in reefs with no problems, except one decided out of the blue to eat some zoanthids then it was down hill from there. You have just got to watch them. I plan on having one in my 150.

The mandarin will do fine in a 75 with 100-150 lbs of live rock after a year. if you introduce one into a new tank that hasn't had time to establish a healthy pod population the mandarin will wipe out the pods in no time and then starve.

yes i planned on waiting a year before putting the mandarin in my tank, with the mandarin i have read something about a "pod pile" do u know what these are and if so can u explain them a little better for me.

It is 50/50 with any dwarf angel. I love them so I am willing to take the risk. I have a cherub, lemon peel and flame in my 180. The one that I worry most about is the lemon peel. The cherub has been with me for 3 years. One of the very first fish I bought. Occasionally these fish will nip. They are grazers so it is just fish-nature. The ultimate question is whether or not you are willing to risk it or not

I had a flame and seen it nip at or around my capnella every once and a while. I was never sure if it was just going after something in the water or the coral its self as the coral never got any smaller..

A pod pile is a pile of small rocks that are secure enough that fish can't move them or get into them. Pods will multiply in this area and provide a food source for mandarin.

I have a large enough tank albeit some will argue. for the most part they are fine. each one is different than the other so I think this helps. I would not do this in a tank smaller than mine.

I have had a flame in my 120 softie tank for 3 years now with no problems. I might worry more with an SPS tank though. I've also had a mandarin in this tank for about a year and a half and he's still fat and happy. I believe the key is lots of live rock and a refugium.
