flame scallop question

I have a question about my flame scallop if anyone has any advice. I have heard they don't live that long and believe mine is dying. My scallop was very healthy and stayed open and seemed to be doing great. All of a sudden the other day he closed up with a little of the red sticking out. Now he is open but all the red has closed in. I believe he is dying but I was going to see if anyone had had a scallop and had any advice. My water has checked fine.
