When I bought my flame scallop it's shell was white. It set up wedged in my live rock. The scallop's shell has turned a brown color. Does this mean that it is dead?

yes, the red stuff is still in the middle. You say it could be algae. The scallop has only ben in the tank for about 5 days.

to clear this up, you mean the white shell has started to change color but the red meat of the scallop is still there and open??

just a side bit of info, these scallops are very hard to keep in a tank as they are non-photosynthetic and must be feed regularly to keep them alive. most people fail at keeping these guys for long periods of time.

Even if the scallop was sick it wouldn't be able to change the colour of the outside of its shell.

Essentially, its shell is dead. The scallop makes the shell, yet it is really just rock.

It sounds to me like this is just some sort of algae capitalizing on a clean surface.

Do you have any pics? Is it a similar colour to the rocks in your tank?
