flash suggestion

I have a canon XT with the popup flash

I will be taking a bunch of photo's in a few weeks at a large family gathering.
this will be first nearly full gathering in years and likely to be the last time to see some of "the old guard"
the newest greatgrandbabies will be unveiled
so I need to step up my game and get good portraits as well as a gazillian candids for all to share.

lens will be my sigma 24/70 f2.8

I think I'll need better flash than I have, suggestions?
or should I ask on strobist?

I'd go with either the 580EX or the 430EX. I'd also get a flash bracket and an off-shoe cord to get the flash up higher off of the camera it you're serious about the portrait thing.
