Florida Keys?

KeysKid

Nano Reefer
I live in the Keys and have a few friends that are really into reef tanks, but not many people at all. Just wondering how many of you guys live in the Keys and do you sell or trade corals?

Thanks.

Hey guys I moved to the keys about 2 years ago but just moved my tank down. I live in Key Largo I dont have much to trade or anything yet a lot died off over the 2 years i had someone else taking care of it. But I would like to know if you collect anything from shore around here. Ive heard that Harry H Harris has some stuff.

Thanks
Aaron

Anywhere in the Keys. There is some stuff you can get here. You can get ricordea and some zoas. Lots of angelfish, jawfish, butterflies, and tons of other fish.

keyskid, do you collect fish/corals for your tank? I have a tank dedicated just to stuff I collect, but have not found any rics locally(broward). I find plenty of zoas, just no rics.

Mostly fish I collect, but I know where you can get rics. They are in hawks channel off the keys, which is in between the main reef and land. Not sure about where off broward.

Thanks for info. Is the area a protected area? I'd love to go down to the keys and dive sometime. Guessing no dive boats are heading to the area with the rics?

The area is not protected, but you must follow the laws. I believe your only aloud 5 per person per day. There are a few guys that dive Rics and sell them for a living, but very very few. Check out myfwc.com for rules and regulations.

Yeah he is really good. He does it for a living, but hes a friend of mine so he gave it to me for free.

But all the time off the Keys I go out and catch Rock Beautys, Queen Angels, Blue Angels, French Angels, Gray Angels, Blue Tangs, Neon Gobies, and a ton more fish.

I also have a mated pair of Coral Banded Shrimp that I caught like 6 months ago and are still living really good in my 55g. It feels cool to have fish and inverts in your tank that you caught yourself.

Do you ever get the pederson shrimp? I have taken them locally and had no luck keeping them. I am thinking of taking one or two with their curly q anem next time.

Never took the anem before, maybe they are lost without it, or just no protection and get eaten. I've had really little scarlet cleaners before though and they don't get eaten.

Yes I have taken them, but the only time I have is with the Haitian Anemone that they were already hosted on. Every time they would do really good on the Anemone for months and months, but then randomly disappear never to be seen again. I'm not sure if a fish would eventually eat them or not, because they are very tiny.

But I have never tried to keep one without a nem. I see them quite often but always in the Gulf side.

I have also gotten a ton of peppermint shrimp, I actually have one now that I have had for about 7 months and still very healthy.

I also find these shrimp sometimes and have kept one now for a while and hes doing really good in my 55g. Someone said it was a ghost or glass shrimp I believe. Not quite sure though.

Heres a picture of him, Pretty cool.

That's cool that you collect a lot of your own fish and inverts. Sounds like it's a lot of fun and very rewarding.
