Hi everyone
I've been outta reefing for a few years, mostly doing the poison dart frog thing these days, though I've got the itch to get back into it. I have a FW planted fluval edge I've been considering modding up, and was hoping you experts would be able to help me out a bit with my research.
First, has anyone ever turned the back column into a water-tight refugium? I was thinking if you drilled into the neck you'd have a built-in overflow that could go right into the back column. No, wait, that's a silly question, these things have been modded every which way under the sun. Can anyone give me any advice on doing that, or point me at a thread in which that's been successfully done? Along those lines, are there any good tiny skimmers that would fit back there?
Second, LED's were getting big right as I got outta the hobby. Have they become advanced enough to be a sole source of light for soft corals? I'm thinking about having some mushrooms, zoas, xenia, and maybe a tongue coral. If so, would anyone recommend some LED systems that would fit well into the hood of the edge?
Third, what kind of salt is good these days? In the past I lived on the coast and had access to free, filtered sea water so I never had to buy salt (that's one of the reasons I don't have a big reef tank anymore, I got spoiled by the free water and I live inland now).
Just to put my thoughts "on paper", I am thinking of doing a single "island" of live rock in the center of the tank surrounded by white sand. Besides a couple corals I'd like to have a pair of mandarin goby, a shark egg, and a couple of baby tangs - I'll just move them to a bigger tank when they outgrow this one. KIDDING!! I'm thinking either a jawfish or firefish, I want this tank to be as lightly stocked and easy as possible. Jawfish are by far my favorite fish of all time, though their digging habits might be too much for a tank this small. Anyone have any thoughts on that?
Thanks in advance for any and all help you can provide!
