Flying with Zoas?

Anyone have any experience flying with zoanthids? Can I carry them on? Will TSA make me check them in a bag?

Thanks for the advice!

Re: Flying with Zoas?

I don't see why you couldn't bring them on the plane, people bring small dogs on the plane why can't you bring some Zoo's:)

With the tsa, alot depends on the airport, and the leadership at said airport. That said, as long as it's not able to be used as a weapon, and can be inspected, and is not considered hazardous material, there is usually not a problem carrying much of anything. You may can call the tsa at the airport to ask a supervisor, or just go in a couple of days in advance to ask about it.

When are you leaving? If you aren't leaving for a few days, I will ask our tsa when I go to work tomorrow.

Well considering Zoa's have palyotoxin's and are deadly... I think that qualifies as a weapon & hazardous! Your planning on high jacking a plane with zoa's arnt you?!?!?! ;)

Serously though... I second calling the airport to ask, I dont see how it could be a problem.

I had a huma huma trigger once, and a large pine snake with me once. The snake was before 9\11, was in a pillowcase inside a backpack. They sent it through the x ray machine and the lady about crapped her pants. She let me on, though. The trigger was after 9\11 when everyone was living in fear, the pulled the bag out, checked it out, and let me through. I don't think they'd let me through with the snake now. If your worried, put them in a checked bag, zo's can take it.

I just came back from Mexico with ~15lb of LR, snails, hermits, lots of zoos, a couple shrimp, and a damsel. I had all these guys in containers in my carry-on. I didn't have any problems.

mecold - Thanks for the offer. I'm not leaving right away, so I would be very interested in first-hand info. Thanks!

Reef'in Colorado - Did you check the bag?

"Hello, airport security? Is it ok if I bring a thermos of neurotoxin containing organisms onboard the plane? I'm planning to give these to some people I'll be meeting. Oh, I don't know their real names.... but we're going to grow a whole bunch of these things and sell them." :eek1:

Between a thermos of zoos and a sharp pencil... you never know!

Now thats funny  . I will stop by the airport today, I need to check on a few things anyway.

I know a lot of local reefers around here that travel fly back all the time with corals and I have yet to here of anyone not being able to get them on the plane. I have heard a lot of stories about puzzled looks on TSA workers faces... Most likely they are going to be thinking, hmmm what a geek, he's got a theros with some water and a rock in it.... I highly doubt that you will have a problem. If you have to check them, if they are in a thermos they will be just fine, provided it's a non-international flight and you won't be in the air more than 4-5 hours.

Hehehe... like if you have an unlabeled container of yellow liquid that you claim is apple juice... and they tell you to drink some in front of them...

So there you are with your Campbell soup thermos of palytoxin consomme...

j/k! :)

Thank god that rule was yanked.. I guess there were to many lawsuits.

I just spoke with A supervisor and a lead screaner with the tsa. They both were in agreement that there is no problem carrying live fish/coral through screening. That said they may still x-ray the thermos or cooler you are carrying them in.

On a side note. I am not sure which airline you are traveling, but some charge a fee if you tell them you have live fish (the same fee they charge for dogs). There is no charge for frozen fish. Go figure!

Goodluck
