I am looking to so this.. My question is should I spray and put my dry rock in the tank. Or build outside the tank and try to get it in the tank after?
I built mine out of the tank fist using light difusion panels pond foam and dry rock. It wont take long to grow coraline algae. Its much easier then dealing with live wet rock, not to mention no rush to get it back in the tank.
I wanted to create a cave look, so the back of mine is stepped off the corner over flows. I lost maybe 4" off the back of the tank but on a 36" deep tank you can hardly notice the difference. I also have a return nozzle pointed behind it to keep things moving. None the less the fish and shrimp love to hide out back there at night.
I extremely caution you to only use pond foam. It wont break down like insulation foams do, its already a dark color so wont look crazy for the few months it takes to see growth.
Get the light diffusion panels cut it to size. I molded mine to create depth and used zip ties to hold it together. Then with it flat laid small pieces of dry rock on it and used the spray foam around them and the rest of the egg crate. Once dry I picked and pulled the smooth foam off to create a more natural look. I have a build on RC somewhere of it. It was for my 125, but it fit into my 300DD just fine.
